1. Wyndham Rewards Earner Business Card: Best For High Fuel Spend ($8,000 – $15,000 annually)

When it comes to high fuel spending, fleet businesses need a card that maximizes savings. The Wyndham Rewards Earner Business Card delivers unmatched value with its top-tier points rates, tailored for businesses with significant fuel expenses. Let’s dive into exactly why that is.

wyndham business earner card
Wyndham Rewards Earner Business Card
Price $95 per year
Strengths

High rebate rate of 8 points per $1 on gas

Generous 80,000 bonus points offer (enough for 10 free nights at Wyndham properties)

Automatic Wyndham Rewards Diamond membership with perks like suite upgrades, welcome amenities, and 15,000 annual bonus points (enough for two free nights)

Weaknesses

APR for purchases ranges from 20.49% to 29.49%, which is relatively high and could be costly if balances aren’t paid in full each month

Points are most valuable when redeemed for Wyndham stays, limiting flexibility for those that prefer cash back only

$95 annual fee requires businesses to maximize the card’s benefits or rewards or face losses

Non-fuel Purchases 8 points per $1 spent on Wyndham hotel stays; 5 points per $1 spent on marketing, advertising and utilities; 1 point per $1 spent on anything else

Why is the Wyndham Rewards Earner Business Card the best gas credit card for high fuel spend?

With an industry-leading 8 points per $1 rewards rate on gas purchases, this card is ideal for fleet operators with high fuel expenses.

Typically points are most valuable when used on Wyndham properties, making it an appealing choice for fleets that are constantly on the road, but in general, they are reportedly worth between 0.6 to 1 cent per point.

Breaking it down with an example then, you’ll earn $480 to $800 in cashback when spending $15,000 annually — a massive benefit compared to other options.

Employee cards are complimentary, meaning there’s no additional cost to get your driver unique credit cards linked to the company account. You’ll get full control over each employee’s total credit line, single purchase limit, and cash access, and have 24/7 online ability to update these controls and monitor individual and overall expenses.

Given the card only has a $95 annual fee and provides 15,000 bonus points to cardholders each year for nothing, you could say this card pays for itself too, since those 15,000 points would be valued at around $120 (if we assume a 0.8 cent per point valuation).

For these reasons, the Wyndham Rewards Earner Business card is the best option around but particularly for those with high fuel spend. Unlike Sam’s Club Business Card, the Citi Custom Cash Card, or even the American Express Business Gold Card, there are no limits on bonus points. Simply, the more gas you purchase, the more points you will receive.

What else does the Wyndham Rewards Earner Business Card offer?

Besides those appealing cashback opportunities for high-value fuel spend, the Wyndham Rewards Earner Business Card can also be used to redeem hotel stays and other business travel needs within Wyndham’s ecosystem, adding flexibility and value for businesses.

That should be appealing for fleet operators and drivers since Wyndham dominates the roadside hotel market across the US. In other words, there should be plenty of opportunities to get free hotel stays with your points, alongside room upgrades and other perks given you’ll have free Wyndham Diamond status by having this card.

You can also transfer and match these point valuations to Caesar’s hotels, too. Plus, you can match your Wyndham Diamond status for Caesars Diamond status, too, which grants you perks like an annual 4-night stay at Atlantis.

And Wyndham adds plenty of points for you to use, too. You’ll get 15,000 bonus points each anniversary year as discussed above, which can be redeemed for free nights at participating Wyndham properties.

At the time of writing, with its introductory offer, you could also get 80,000 points (enough for ten nights at its properties) if you spend $4,000 within 90 days of signing up (for 40,000 points) and spend $15,000 overall within 365 days (for another 40,000 points).

The US Bank Altitude Reserve Card is no longer available

One of the top-rated gas credit cards for travel perks was the US Bank Altitude Reserve Visa Infinite Card. It commanded a $400 annual fee but offered users 4.5% cashback on gas when using mobile wallet payments and $325 in travel credit each year.

However, as of 14 November 2024, US Bank is no longer accepting new customers for this card. Existing cardholders will continue to have the same service as normal.

2. Sam’s Club Business Mastercard: Best for Moderate Fuel Spend ($3,000 – $6,000 annually)

For smaller fleet businesses with moderate gas expenses, the Sam’s Club Business Mastercard offers a no-annual-fee solution with generous cashback rates.

Earning Limits 5% cashback up to $6,000 spent per year, then 1%; rewards are capped at $5,000 per calendar year

Why is the Sam’s Club Business Mastercard the best gas credit card for moderate fuel spend?

With 5% cashback on gas purchases (up to $6,000 annually), including at Sam’s Club and Walmart fuel stations, this card is ideal for businesses with moderate fleet needs. It delivers consistent savings without additional costs since you’ll have no payments to make besides your Sam’s Club membership.

What else does the Sam’s Club Business Mastercard offer?

Aside from fuel savings, this card offers rewards on dining (3%) and purchases at Sam’s Club (1%). It’s a versatile card for small business operators looking to maximize their spending across different categories.

Albeit, these bonuses come via Sam’s Club membership which starts at $50 annually for Club members and $110 for Plus members. This card serves as your Sam’s Club membership card and has no foreign transaction fees, adding convenience for businesses with international transactions.

Offering 4% cashback with a similar cap ($7,000 annually) and no annual fee (requires a Costco membership), the Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citi is another appealing option for middling fuel spend.

3. American Express Business Gold Card: Best Credit Card with Gas Rewards for Flexible Business Spending

For businesses seeking a versatile rewards structure that adapts to their spending patterns, the American Express Business Gold Card offers substantial benefits, especially for those with significant fuel expenses. Here’s an in-depth look at its features:

Weaknesses

Gas Purchases 4 points per $1 spent (in top 2 categories, such as gas spending)
Non-fuel Purchases 4 points per $1 spent in the two categories each billing cycle, from a list of six categories, on up to $150,000 in combined purchases each calendar year; 1 point per $1 spent thereafter on these categories and on all other purchases
Additional Perks No foreign transaction fees; Up to $240 in annual statement credits for eligible purchases at FedEx, Grubhub, and U.S. office supply stores (enrollment required); Up to $155 in annual credits for Walmart+ membership fees (enrollment required)
Earning Limits 4X points apply to the first $150,000 in combined purchases from the top two categories each calendar year; X1 points thereafter

Why is the American Express Business Gold Card the best gas credit card for flexible spending?

The American Express Business Gold Card earns you x4 Membership Rewards points on your top two eligible spending categories each month, up to $150k per year.

With those points estimated to be valued around 1 to 2 cents per point (depending on redemption form), that could make for a healthy return. For instance, if you’re top spending category was for fuel, and your company spent $15,000 on gas that year, you’ll receive a value of between $600 and $1,200 to spend. Minus the fairly hefty (compared to other credit cards on this page) $375 annual fee, you’ll still have between $225 and $825 in cashback points to use.

If we assume you only used the card for fuel purchases and took the low 1-cent value for each point, then you’ll need to spend $9,375 annually to break even, which might deter smaller business fleets. Though given you’ll be getting x4 rewards on another top spending category too, alongside points for all other purchases and many other perks we’re yet to detail, it’s likely you’ll be sitting in profits rather than losses.

After you’re first $150,000 in combined purchases of the top two eligible categories each calendar year, the reward point rate for these categories drops to x1.

What else does the American Express Business Gold Card offer?

Besides US gas stations, the eligible categories for these rewards are US restaurants, US purchases for advertising in select media, US purchases made directly from select technology providers, US shipping purchases plus US purchases of computer hardware, software, and cloud computing from select providers.

There are several other perks of the American Express Business Gold Card, too. For starters, right now new customers get 100,000 Membership Rewards points after they spend $15,000 on eligible purchases with the Business Gold Card within the first 3 months of Card Membership.

You can also earn x3 Membership Rewards points on flights and prepaid hotels booked on amextravel.com using your Business Gold Card.

There are no foreign transaction fees either, so this card is a solid choice for us no matter where you or your team find themselves globally.

4. Coast Card: Best Credit Card for Gas Rewards Designed For Fleets

The best gas credit card specifically designed for fleets is the Coast Card. It stays in its lane, primarily focusing its benefits on gas and electric charging rebates (which I’d say are pretty tempting compared to the competition). Better yet, unlike most credit cards with gas rewards, it integrates with your fleet operations via popular telematics and fleet management software like Samsara and Azuga.

Coast Fuel Card
Pricing $4 per month, per card
Strengths

Wide acceptance due to Visa network integration

Rebates between 4¢-10¢ per gallon at over 29,000 US stations

Transparent and competitive fees of $4 per active card, per month

1% cashback on non-fuel purchases

Weaknesses

1¢ per gallon rebate rate for all other gas stations may be lower compared to some competitors

Sole proprietors won't be approved at time of writing

Rebates and Pricing
Rebate rates Per gallon of fuelCost Per month
1¢ minimum at all gas stations $4 for all active cards
4¢ to 10¢ at 29,000+ gas stations Late payment fee of 1% or $35 (whichever is higher)

Why is the Coast Card the best fleet credit card for gas rewards?

Offering rebate rates of 2 cents per gallon at all gas stations, the Coast Card means you’ll always get a decent cashback rate wherever you re-fuel compared to many US fleet card companies.

Better yet, you can get up to 10 cents per gallon back at Coast’s partner stations. Those higher rebate stations (above 6 cents per gallon) are mostly found in Northeastern regions of the US and Houston, Texas, though I found that I could regularly find 4 cents per gallon stations in the majority of the US.

To make your fuel accounting simpler, the Coast Card and its accompanying software automatically capture the number of gallons purchased as well as allow you to set fleet-specific controls, like spending limits, driver ID verification requirements, and receipt uploading. As stated, you can also link your spending with popular fleet software and integrate its spending records with your driver’s movements.

What else does the Coast Card offer?

Unlike some of the other credit cards discussed above, the Coast Card doesn’t require additional membership to a partner organization.

Likewise, you’ll not face as hefty of an annual fee for the pleasure, with Coast offering transparent and competitive fees of $4 per active card, per month. Albeit, a per-card charge means you’ll end up with a little extra cost for multiple drivers to use a Coast Card compared to other gas credit cards on this page which have complimentary staff cards, like American Express, or others with no fee per card at all, like the Citi Custom Cash Card.

Besides gas cashback, you’ll also get a flat 1% cashback rate on all non-fuel purchases. While that’s appealing, these non-fuel rebates/rewards aren’t as high as other credit cards I’ve detailed on this page, as the Coast Card is designed for fleet usage in particular rather than any other general purchases.

5. Citi Custom Cash Card: Best for Owner-Operators with Low Fuel Spend ($1,000 – $2,000 annually)

If you are an owner-operator who has minimal gas expenses, the Citi Custom Cash Card offers excellent value without an annual fee. In other words, even smaller fuel budgets can earn significant rewards.

Since this is a personal credit card, it will only be suitable for use by an individual such as an owner-operator, though it can also be authorized for use by friends and family.

Spending & Rewards

Non-fuel Purchases Unlimited 1% cashback on all other purchases
Additional Perks 0% introductory APR on purchases and balance transfers for 15 months; variable APR of 18.49% – 28.49% thereafter; Earn $200 cash back after spending $1,500 on purchases in the first 6 months of account opening
Earning Limits 5% cash back applies to the first $500 spent in the top eligible category each billing cycle; 1% cash back thereafter

Why is the Citi Custom Cash Card the best gas credit card for owner operators with low fuel spend?

With 5% cashback on your highest spend category up to $500 per billing cycle, you’ll be able to maximize rewards even with moderate fuel purchases. Granted, that figure is much smaller than competitors, but since this is a personal card this is understandable and should be enough for an individual. Of course, you’ll want to make sure fuel is your top purchasing category when using this card for these cashback rates to apply, too.

The other potential categories this 5% cashback could apply to, besides from gas stations, are restaurants, grocery stores, drugstores, select travel and transit, select streaming services, home improvement stores, fitness clubs, and live entertainment.

These cashback percentages are earned as Citi’s ThankYou Reward Points, which are estimated to be worth between 1 and 1.5 cents each when redeemed for cashback or anything else that Citi allows redemption for. Inevitably, this will vary depending on how you opt to cash out.

It’s worth noting that there is no fee to add authorized users to the Citi Custom Cash Card, either. That means adding co-workers to help you earn cash back faster and max out the $500 cap on the 5% back category.

What else does the Citi Custom Cash Card offer?

The card’s automatic category tracking eliminates the need to monitor bonus categories manually. Additionally, it’s versatile, allowing rewards to apply to other spending categories if your gas usage varies month-to-month.

At the time of writing, the Citi Custom Cash Card is also offering an additional 4% cash back on hotels, car rentals, and attractions booked on the Citi Travel portal through 6/30/2025.

Additionally, the card’s 0% introductory APR on purchases and balance transfers for 15 months should be beneficial for managing cash flow.

How To Pick the Best Credit Card With Gas Rewards?

Just as with any financial investment, you need to consider the relative costs and benefits of each credit card you could select.

Key factors to consider:

  1. Spending habits: Is your fleet constantly on the road? If so, prioritize cards offering year-round gas rewards over rotating categories.
  2. Annual fee: Weigh the cost against potential rewards. High-spending fleet businesses might justify premium cards with fees, but businesses that only make weekly deliveries, for instance, may prefer no-fee options.
  3. Rewards rate: Higher cashback percentages are better for those with high fuel spending.
  4. Spending caps: Look at limits on cashback categories, such as the limit of gas spending you can get a cashback return on.
  5. Additional perks: Look beyond gas. Many top cards offer cashback or points on groceries, travel, and dining. Cards with attractive introductory bonuses can provide immediate value too, especially for new cardholders. Relatedly, you’ll want to confirm how rewards can be redeemed as some cards are restrictive, while others offer flexibility (e.g., travel credits, gift cards, or cash).
Verdict

The best credit card for gas rewards depends on your unique spending patterns. Are you after year-round consistency, or do rotating categories appeal more? Would you benefit from a broader rewards program encompassing dining and groceries? By assessing your habits, the right choice becomes clear.

For pure profits on fuel spend, I’d argue that the Wyndham Rewards Earner Business Card is the clear top choice for most business fleets, given its 8x rewards are a cut above the competition. If you are an owner-operator and don’t want a business credit card, the Citi Custom Cash Card is a solid choice for getting a rebate without the requirement to be an incorporated enterprise.
