Our research has found that Esso Card National is the best overall fuel card for UK businesses and is backed by global fuel card supplier WEX. With this card, you’ll be able to access great savings on fuel, while earning Nectar or Tesco Clubcard points.

Using our extensive experience, we’ve analysed and compared the other top business fuel cards in the UK, deciding on our top four discussed below such as the Allstar One card.

1. Esso Card National: Best overall fuel card for UK businesses

Issued by WEX Europe, the Esso Card National is our top recommendation for business fuel cards in the UK. Here’s what it could offer your fleet business at a glance.

What Does Esso Card National Offer Your Fleet?

The Esso Card from WEX European Services is a well-rounded fuel card. As with the other cards on the list, it works on a fixed weekly tariff pricing structure, which allows you to better forecast your fuel expenditure.

You can also earn Nectar points and Tesco Clubcard points when filling up at certain forecourts. This is a helpful incentive for your drivers to use the card, as they can also benefit from extra savings when shopping for essentials at stores like Sainsbury’s and Argos. Once linked, whenever you purchase a minimum of 10 litres of fuel, you can swap 300 Nectar points to get 5p off per litre.

As of early 2025, Esso is also offering a welcome bonus of 1000 points when you first use a top-up with fuel via the Esso App, and then further offers with each top-up. Your 2nd, 4th, and 6th refills will earn you four, six and eight times the Nectar points respectively, according to Esso, and on your 8th refill, you’ll get a bonus of 750 points on top. Esso stresses this is time-limited, but while the offer is running, you’ll reset after eight top-ups and start the cycle again!

Its coverage is sure to never leave you out in the cold with over 3,600 stations UK-wide, including over 2,400 24-hour sites. HGV drivers should be pleased that there are over 1,170 sites for lorries and other heavy goods vehicles. And there are over 110 Motorway sites on major UK routes to boot.

By downloading the Esso app, you can locate stations near you by using its station locator tool. We’d say it’s an essential tool when on the road to ensure your drivers quickly and easily identify their nearest site and filter by the specific criteria you need like stations with Synergy fuel, that offer Nectar points or Tesco Clubcard points. It should be noted that the app only shows Esso stations but the card is also accepted by participating Shell and BP-branded sites as well.

The Esso Card National doesn’t offer as much range as regards charging other vehicle-related expenses, as demonstrated by Allstar. With the Esso card, you’ll be able to purchase fuel and motor oil, but unfortunately, cleaning, parking and toll fees will need to be charged to another business card. This can, in the long run, make expense management a little more complicated.

Esso Card National Pricing

The Esso Card National used to have a fee of £3 per month or £36 per year, however, in 2025 the new price is £5 per month or £50 per year, with the choice between the two payment periods being up to you. While it covers the major fuel brands outlined above, if you do need to fill up at another station, there will be an additional charge.

Beyond that, there are some fairly hefty fees to be concerned about if you don’t meet Esso requirements. That includes its minimum spending levels: you need to purchase at least 300 litres per month or you will face an £18 administration fee. That’s much higher than the penalties imposed by The Fuel Store or DCI for not meeting a minimum spend threshold. Meanwhile, with the BP List card, you can avoid minimum spend limits of £1 per month.

Additionally, there is also a similarly large £45 inactivity charge if you don’t make any card transactions within any three months, though for most fleet businesses this shouldn’t be a problem. On the other hand, a notable bonus with the Esso Card is that it’s completely free to Blue Light Card and Defence Discount card holders (those who work in the emergency services or the armed forces).

2. Allstar One: Best for Wide Network Coverage

The Allstar One gives you access to over 7,700 fuel sites – or, in other words, 90% of stations in the UK (including all major oil brands and supermarket sites). Here’s what else it offers to UK businesses with a fleet of vehicles.

What Does Allstar One Card Offer Your Fleet?

The Allstar One card is our top recommendation for wide network coverage. Boasting the UK’s largest fuel station network with a whopping 7,700 sites covering 90% of the country, Allstar is the clear winner in this department. Your drivers can consult Allstar’s Co-Pilot app which identifies the closest station while on the go.

It promises rebates of up to 8p on every litre of diesel purchased at participating sites. While the card provides access to a vast network of fuel stations and EV charging points, specific rebates for petrol and electric vehicle (EV) charging are not prominently featured in the available information or via its app, so we can’t be sure about the exact savings.

They don’t offer points or discounts as seen with the Esso Card or BP List either, but they do offer a pay-as-you-go subscription to AA breakdown and fuel assist protection, which provides roadside help in the case of misfuelling or other hiccups.

Allstar also allows you to charge other vehicle-related expenses to the card, beyond just fuel. You’ll be able to pay for M6 toll fees, engine lubricants, maintenance, parking and cleaning fees too.

Allstar Online is the name of their online platform which allows you to see live intel regarding your fuel expenditure in the form of tables and interactive dashboards. Plus, it’s all collated in an HMRC-compliant invoice at the end of the month, which is freely delivered via the online portal.

Allstar One Pricing

Unlike some other providers, Allstar does not publicly display its full pricing plan online, so we can’t give a complete picture of where it ranks among the other cards.

What we do know is that you can choose to pay monthly or annually and by reading their terms and conditions, there is the potential for numerous additional costs that could surprise customers if they aren’t monitored closely. Underused account fees (£15 per card per month) and risk-based fees (up to £0.34 per litre or kWh) can quickly eat into profits if fleets are not consistently using the card or if they’re purchasing at premium rates.

Similarly, a convenience fee (up to £0.10 per litre or kWh), non-direct debit payment charges (£20 per invoice), and network service fees (up to £5.00 per transaction) are notable for businesses watching their margins carefully.

Beyond this, there are also potential charges for late payments (5% of outstanding invoice value, plus possible interest) and returned direct debits (£95) underscoring how important it is to keep all payments current.

Since Allstar provides a bespoke plan based on your individual needs and eligibility concerning how you earn rebates, it’s best to contact them directly to see how this may look for your business.

3. The Fuel Store Card: Best for Fraud Protection

The Fuel Store Card has the most complete security measures of all of the cards we analysed and is the only option that offers fraud protection (for an additional £1.50) per month. But, beyond that, there are various other perks to picking The Fuel Store Card.

What Does Fuel Store Card Offer Your Fleet?

The additional fraud protection we mentioned above is called FraudGuard. By opting for the £1.50 per month add-on, you will see your account monitored live for fraudulent activities, with any unusual spending behaviours promptly flagged. That could be crucial if you are concerned about your business fuel cards being used for non-business purposes.

Besides this, there are plenty of other ways the Fuel Store Card is appealing. With 3,500+ stations nationwide, including more than 900 HGV sites, The Fuel Store has a wide network of stations at which you’ll be able to fill up. While it’s pretty extensive, including brands such as BP, Shell, Texaco, Moto, Esso, Jet and Certas, it does fall second place to Allstar’s mammoth 7,700-strong network.

While The Fuel Store doesn’t have a mobile application to speak of, you can view all its participating locations via its Station Finder webpage on any internet-connected device and filter for The Fuel Store Card and relevant facilities.

The card provides access to fixed weekly discounted commercial diesel prices, allowing fleets to forecast and monitor fuel expenditure effectively. It is restricted to fuel, oil and lubricant purchases, which minimises the risk of unauthorised spending. Though, this might be too restrictive your fleet regularly makes wider-ranging purchases for things like parking, cleaning, toll fees or vehicle maintenance; the AllStar One is a better choice in this regard.

Still, as with the Esso Card, you can collect Tesco Clubcard Points and Nectar Points when using The Fuel Store Card, meaning you and your drivers can also score extra savings on supermarket shopping.

In terms of reporting, The Fuel Store Card allows you to view both table format reports and interactive dashboards via its customer portal to get full, 24/7 visibility of your fuel expenses, driver insights, transaction histories and card management options. As is the case with the other cards in our list, you’ll also receive HMRC-compliant invoices to make VAT returns a breeze.

And, besides the aforementioned FraudGuard, there are a couple of other paid add-ons should you be interested too, such as Fuel AI: artificial intelligence designed to optimise fleet management and reduce fuel spend by between 5 and 9% according to The Fuel Store. There’s also The Clean Air Partnership which offsets your carbon footprint from your fuel spend.

The Fuel Store Card Pricing

The Fuel Store Card was one of the most affordable cards on our list, setting you back £15 per year with no transaction fees since businesses pay only for the fuel drawn (although business accounts needed to surpass 300L per month otherwise your fee can be hiked up to £10 per month).

However, The Fuel Store no longer publicly advertises its prices, so we can’t be sure if those figures still hold true today. If they are, it’s certainly an appealing choice in terms of monthly spend, while the 300L threshold is relatively low (but might mean this card is best suited to those who know for sure that they will consistently use it).

What is for certain is you’ll be able to purchase fuel at a fair, fixed weekly price in line with the market rate.

4. DCI One: Best for Irish Fleets

The DCI One card, issued by Diesel Card Ireland (which itself is part of fuel card distributor Radius, is our top recommendation for Irish fleets as it has an unparalleled 100% network coverage within both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Let’s look at what it offers besides excellent Irish coverage.

What Does DCI One Card Offer Your Fleet?

The main USP for DCI One and the other offerings from Diesel Card Ireland is that it boasts the widest network of Irish fuel sites so it should be the go-to choice for businesses which largely, or even exclusively, operate there. DCI has 100% coverage of Ireland, comprising over 1,900 sites, including HGV and 24/7 locations, plus over 1,400 charging points for EV vehicles, and can be used for diesel, petrol, Adblue and other fuel-related costs.

Its e-route station locator has both desktop and smartphone apps, plus – something the other fuel cards on this list cannot boast – SatNav download options. In other words, you’ll be more easily able to find the gas station you can use this card at compared to the others if you regularly use a SatNav, rather than needing to have another screen on your window screen.

If you do use your phone for navigation from fuel card providers on this page, you are in for a treat as out of all the station finder apps I’ve used, it was my favourite since you can find stations along your specified route, as you can see below.

DCI’s Velocity online portal makes reporting easier by grouping transactions by driver, location and vehicle, too. Like the other card providers, you can set different purchasing permissions for each of your cards here, and DCI sends weekly or fortnightly VAT invoices.

In terms of perks like loyalty schemes or discounts on hotels or food purchases, this card doesn’t provide anything extra. Although, it does allow you to purchase engine lubricants and pay for parking, so you can at least keep those expenses on the same account.

DCI One Pricing

At £18 + VAT per year for each card, it’s one of the more expensive fuel cards in our rankings when it comes to monthly cost.

Just like the other cards in the list, when paying for fuel with a DCI One card, you’ll pay a fixed weekly rate. This means the guesswork is taken out of buying fuel and you’ll be able to better forecast your outgoings ahead of time.

This is another card that’s best for consistent users, as there is a £1 weekly charge if the card is not used, per card not used. However, on the bright side, there is no minimum amount of fuel you need to purchase per period.
